Selfless, pretty explanatory. You live less for yourself and more for something outside of yourself. Selfish, let’s break this word down some. The suffix, “-ish“, forms a word with a meaning of possession or addiction. So, the world “selfish” pretty much means that you take all for your own self. You have an addiction of possessing things and doing things for your own good, not the good of others.
These two words have been on my mind and in my heart a lot lately. Being selfish is something that is real easy to do. Greediness, being prideful, being mean to someone else, and not being thoughtful or generous of others are all examples of selfishness. If I can recall, I don’t believe Jesus had one bit of selfishness in Him. Jesus, in John 5:2-9, healed a lame man who tried numerous times to get in the pool at Bethesda. No one would help by putting the man in the water. Instead, they got in front of him and put themselves in the pool. Jesus knew that the man had been at the pool a long time, since he had the infirmity for 38 years, but instead of putting the man off, Jesus healed him. He could have easily walked away from the scene and ignored the sick man, but His compassion and selfless manner of love kept Him there. One of the greatest acts of selflessness that Jesus did was when He hung up on that old rugged cross and died for you and me (John 3:16, Matthew 27:32-56). God could have told us to fend for ourselves and suffer for eternity, but He didn’t. Hell has never been intended for human beings. It has always been for Satan (Lucifer, the devil) and his angels because of what he did before the creation of man. Once God created man, what did man do? Sin. What was the wage, or price of sin? Death (Romans 6:23). That’s why God came down in the form of human flesh (Jesus), took upon the sins of all man kind, and died a selfless death on the cross. Jesus rose three days later, selflessly bringing life to all who believe wholly on Him. He paid the ultimate price of sin (which is death) by dying for us so we don’t have to. Again, all you have to do is believe on Him with your mouth and in your heart…wholly. Then, you won’t have to worry about burning in hell for all eternity.
You may think that what I just told you was all a tale and nothing more. If it was just another fairy-tale, then why didn’t Disney adopt it into its other stories and fables? Get my point? Christianity is real my friend, and once you get it, you have to live it. It is a constant battle, but we must keep walking in Jesus’s steps anyways. A majority, well really all of those steps, being selflessness. Do I have work to do? Yes, I absolutely do. What about you? Where do you stand when it comes to being selfless and not selfish? Jesus did it, and so should we. Even if it is sending somebody different an encouraging verse or quote everyday. Or maybe you have a lot of toys or clothes that could be given to someone in need. Find ways to be selfless and do them. Will you join me?
