As I was reading in Daniel 2:1-23 this evening, something stood out to me that really stuck in my mind. Within these verses, King Nebuchadnezzar (ruler over Babylon who took Israel into captivity because of their idolatry) had a dream. He states when he woke up that the dream was gone from him. I am not sure if this means that he completely forgot the dream, or if he had the knowledge of it and was testing the Chaldeans, who were wise men. The king wanted these men to tell him what the dream was and state the meaning of it. If they did not do so, they would be cut to pieces and their houses would be thrown to the side basically as trashed (the Bible says a dunghill, which means the feces of humans or animals). If the Chaldeans did what the king asked, they’d be honored and rewarded for it.
With that said, the part that stood out to me was in verses 10-11. It says, “The Chaldeans answered the king, and said, ‘ There is not a man on earth who can tell the king’s matter; therefore no king, lord, or ruler has ever asked such things of any magician, astrologer, or Chaldean. It is a difficult thing that the king requests, and there is no other who can tell it to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.'” These “wise men” admitted to the fact that they could not explain the meaning of the dream, nor tell the king what the dream was in the first place. They said the only ones who could tell the king were the gods, but in reality, all of the gods that people worship are dead. Either they were a physical human being who later died, or they were just made up beings who have no purpose of life to give to their followers. Ultimately, the only One who can truly know all things is THE God of the universe. He is the One that knows everything. Continuing on, the king got mad that no one could tell him his dream nor the meaning of it, and he wanted the wise men, Daniel, and his companions to all be killed. Daniel heard of the king’s anger, went to him, and petitioned that Daniel be given time and he’d tell the king the dream’s meaning. The king agreed, and Daniel discussed the matter with his three companions. They desired God’s mercy for the meaning of this dream, and at night, God told Daniel in a vision what the dream meant. Daniel praised and blessed God for His answer to Daniel’s prayer.
There is evidence that God is real. If you look at history and what is happening in the world today, and you line it up with different dates and books of the Bible, everything that has been said has either been fulfilled, is being fulfilled now, or will be fulfilled in the near future. Every time scientists try to contradict the Bible, God’s Word ultimately proves the scientists wrong. I say all of this because God is truly alive, and He knows our every thought, action, worry, doubt, etc. He knew Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, and He used Daniel in mighty ways to prove His existence to the king. He blessed Daniel for his obedience to Him, and He knew and heard the prayers of Daniel and his companions (Hananiah, Azariah, and Mishael).
