I once heard that salmon swim upstream (against the current) rather than downstream (with the flow of the current). They do this due to their reproduction process, and once they get to their destination, they spawn, or lay their eggs in the best spot possible. You may be questioning why they don’t just go with the flow and lay their eggs like every other fish does, but that is how God specifically designed them to be.

In life, it is so easy to just go through the motions. We wake up, do our daily routine for the day, and go to bed. The same cycle occurs every day, and we just live a life of mediocrity because we have no motivation or strength to go above and beyond that. We go with the flow of everybody else out of fear of rejection for being open, vulnerable, and different for the sake of what is right.

By going with the flow, we produce the same outcome as everybody else who is OF the world. Being of the world means to live the same lifestyle of those who are trying to blend in and follow the same current through life.

If we don’t go against the current and reach out to the best spot that we possibly could in order to produce something greater for the cause of Christ, we end up feeling lifeless, useless, and worthless. Our self esteem lowers, our outlook of life goes dim, and we do what we do just to get by. We weren’t created to be like everybody else. We were created to live for our Creator.

I walk the halls at school and see so many people flowing with the current, and it is so easy to jump right in with those same people and blend in so that I can be accepted and valued just as they are based off of worldly standards. These standards don’t even begin to compare with the acceptance and worth we can find ultimately in God when we give up everything to be filled with His satisfaction, joy, and strength to fight our daily battles.

I find myself straying away from God when I try to blend in, and here lately, that has been the case. It has left me feeling drained spiritually, and I have felt so distanced from God because of not spending time with Him like I should. The good news is, I don’t have to stay in that state, and you don’t either. Today I am choosing to let go of my dreams, my decisions, and ultimately my control, in order to go against the current to fight Satan back instead of letting him trample me every day. I am choosing to give everything over to God so that He can fight my battles and give me what He knows is best for my life.

The Bible says in Romans 12:1-2, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” As a follower of Christ, conforming to the image of God rather than the world is not an option, it is a reasonable action that we MUST do daily.

In order to ultimately have the strength to go against the current and the norms of everybody else, we have to renew our mind daily by reading God’s Word, praying, worshiping, and surrounding ourselves with people who are like-minded for the sake of Christ. Don’t worry whether you will be alone in going against the current. God will place the right people in your life if you just ask Him, and you are never really alone because He is walking right beside you every step of this journey called life. There are so many people out there who want to be open and honest with others, and they are in the waiting process right now, asking God to give them people who they can grow closer to Him with. You will produce so much more, and your life will begin to thrive if you live the way God intends for you to live.

So just keep swimming, but swim against the flow of the world. Ask yourself, “Am I living like a salmon, or am I just blending in with the other fish?” It’s never too late to change which current you are going with.
